On Halloween Day, I met with some Occupy San Diego (OSD) protesters at the San Diego Civic Center. I would guess there were about 50-100 people there, but learned that most of the "occupy" organizers were at a meeting at the City Hall (the Occupy San Diego leaders are attempting to get the San Diego City Council to pass a resolution supporting the occupation at the Civic Center). So I dropped off 8 free "The Last Circle" books and donated a hand-full of $20 bills to buy meals.
Interestingly, the people I talked to were interested in what the book had to say, and were articulate, savvy and educated, despite their appearance and exhaustion from camping out near the Civic Center steps for over three weeks to date.
A couple of the occupiers noted that support is growing, especially from powerful Unions in the area. Stand-by for further developments on this alliance. The dynamics of this movement could escalate in San Diego soon.
One union, the International Union of Security, Police and Fire Professionals of America and Transit Systems Security (SPFPA), marched into the OSD camp at lunchtime on October 27th to show solidarity. They also joined OSD for their 5 p.m. march, where they marched the trolley line and ended at the 12th and Imperial Transit Center. Steve Maritas of the SPFPA explained “We’re taking on corporate America!” John Lehnherr added, “No more corporate America living on the backs of the working class.”
On October 23rd, the National Nurses United (N.N.U.) set up a medical clinic at the occupied Civic Center in downtown San Diego. O.S.D. wrote at their website that they extended their gratitude and solidarity with the N.N.U. Occupiers and nurses from the N.N.U who bravely marched into the Civic Center plaza and set up a canopy to act as the “People’s Clinic” on the evening of Sunday, October 23rd
Several days ago over 100 police seized the tents and supplies of the San Diego Occupiers, so now they need blankets and other supplies. (I'll be donating blankets). Over 51 arrests have taken place so far, and the police presence is overwhelming. On the day I visited the encampment, it seemed like there were as many police as there were occupiers. However, the police kept a respectful distance and seemed to have become less antagonistic as the peaceful vigil continues.
There was supposed to be a Halloween March at 5:30 p.m. beginning in Balboa Park and ending at the Civic Center and the Gaslamp district. It was billed as follows: "Costumes, street theatre, and candy --- Group to march from Balboa Park to the Gaslamp to highlight frightening facts about corruption in America’s financial and political systems."
I didn't attend the March, but looking forward to reading about it today at their website:
